1957 Mercedes 300SL front end restoration: Part 2 Headlight Housing Welded and Metal Finished Basically this post shows all the pieces we made in Part 1 TIG welded together and metal finished to make one headlight housing piece to now offer up to the body as one unit. From here we will mark, cut, and TIG weld the housing into the body which will follow in a Part 3 post. If you are wondering on how we referenced shape to replicate the complexity of the front,we had a Mercedes Gullwing to ‘pattern off.’ We could not use the right-hand headlight from this 300SL because it needed extensive repairs as well. Complete rebuilt housing from new sheet metal. Ready to be grafted into body. Housing clico’d up to the body. Reference lines marked in conjunction with our templates taken from the Mercedes Gullwing. Mating trim ring TIG welded to the body of the housing. Now the housing is ready to graft into the body. The completion of this head light housing restoration will be continued in Part 3.
